The Green Human and other science stories

Nurin and her friends kept a journal of made-up science stories, like a boy who turns green after swallowing chloroplasts. Here it is in full.

Nurin kept a journal of fictional science stories. Her friends wrote some parts of it too. Journaling and reflecting was a habit they took on for themselves.

The first page lists the story titles: The growing watermelon in his stomach, The half dunan hat, The human that lay eggs and The green human (chloroplasts). The journal pages we have tell the first two.

The Watermelon

The first story is about Cresella, a 31-year-old woman who wished for a baby. Before writing it, the author planned it on a page of its own, with who, when, what and how, and drew Cresella with a watermelon for a tummy.

The Green Human

The second story is about a boy named Syairazi who is studying chlorophyll. He accidentally swallows chloroplasts, and his friends tell him he looks as green as a plant. Someone shows him a mirror, and he is green. "Oh no! It must have been the chroloplast" he shouts.

All the names in the stories are made up. The spelling is kept as the children wrote it.

He showed Syairazi a mirror. To his horror, Syairazi was green in colour. He thought and thought.... "Oh no! It must have been the chroloplast that I've accidently eaten!" He shouted

These stories start with a real piece of science, like what chloroplasts do in a plant, and then ask "what if?" That is a playful kind of Investigate. Journaling like this was a by-product of moving through the 4-I. Stage by stage, the children got better at certain things and began to find their own identities.
